Mission

Preservation of the Maasai wilderness, wildlife and cultural heritages, through community-based conservation projects, providing an economic stake in conservation to the Maasai landowners of the greater Mt. Kilimanjaro ecosystem.

After creating Campi ya Kanzi as a community eco-lodge, Antonella and Luca Belpietro understood a Trust would be the best tool to make sure all conservation needs and people needs could be properly addressed. In 2000 they founded Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT).
The aim is to preserve what we like to call a conservation triangle: the base being represented by the land. Protecting the land as a wilderness, the other two sides of the triangle would be almost self- preserved: wildlife and culture. In just a decade we have grown from a small -employing 10 local Maasai - to a significant organization, currently employing 200 local people, which became a key conservation player for the entire eco-system.
