In the early days of safaris, a hunter looking for game wanted to be able to move light and quick. Based at the main camp, he would put up a fly camp in remote areas looking for wildlife. "Fly" is the name of the upper sheet of a tent. Hunters would simply take the top sheet, and sleep underneath, hence the name fly camp. A simple mobile camp is even today called a fly camp. We offer to our guests this unique experience. Depending on the season and on the consequent wildlife movement, we mount a simple camp either on the banks of a river at the foothills of Kilimanjaro, or in the plains near the lake. Ernest Hemingway hunted here. You will be immersed in the same wilderness that so profoundly inspired him.
Your facilities at the fly camp will be a bucket shower, a
pit toilet tent, and a double tent with safari beds. Dining is
under the stars.
We suggest a game walk to the fly camp, arriving at sunset. Hot
water will be ready in your bucket shower. A drink next to the
fire, on the river banks or in the plains thriving with
wildlife, will make you feel like the first hunters. Dinner
under the stars will be unforgettable, while the river gently
flows a few feet away, or zebras bark in the dark. At both camp
locations it is not unusual to have elephants coming nearby to
"sniff" around. In the morning a walk upstream is
always rich with surprises: bushbucks are common, and so are
elephants. If the camp will be next to the lake, we will walk
through literally hundreds of zebras and wildebeests. We have
also seen a cheetah kill on foot: simply unforgettable.
